1947 Lincoln Continental Coupe $49,500

The current owner purchased this award-winning Continental in the fall of 2005 from a private individual. In 2006 – 2007, he set out to bring it up to the highest of mechanical standards and achieve the utmost in reliability. In 2008 – 2009, his next goal was to bring it up to the same high standards cosmetically. Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright dubbed the Continental \"the most beautiful car ever made.\" (from About Lincoln – the 1930s. The Official Site of Lincoln Vehicles…Lincoln.com). It is also considered a “full classic” by the Classic Car Club of America (C.C.C.A.).

Note: When the owner decided to sell this Lincoln, he wanted to make sure everything was correct on the car AND on the title. He found out the car was inadvertently titled with the wrong year (as a 1948, not a 1947) some years ago. The owner immediately contacted the bureau of motor vehicles, who in turn contacted the Ohio State Highway Patrol, so they could inspect the car. To ensure the title was correct, he needed to have documentation from the state.

The Lincoln was thoroughly inspected and is now verified as correct. This procedure enabled us to verify that the year and serial number on the title match the serial number on the car. It also verified that the serial number is correctly placed on the car, as it should be.

[ Paint ] – The owner tells us the paint is a base coat, clear coat; produced by the paint manufacturer R&M. He said there was actually a sealer put on top of the steel, then 4 coats of primer, then 4 coats of color, then an additional 4 coats of clear. After that, the sanding, rubbing, etc. process took place. He adds that the car was sanded down with 1500, then wet sanded with 2500, and then buffed. Most of the work was done by hand.

In going closely over the car (and being extremely critical), I could not detect any nicks, although the owner said there may be a little one inside the door jam. Under bright light, I could not see any scratches, other than the ultra fine scratches you get from washing a car. It is extremely smooth and nicely rubbed out, with the shiniest, smoothest finish you can imagine. It matches beautifully all the way around and it is clearly obvious that this Lincoln received a very professional repaint.

[ Body ] – Looking at the body (and again, being extremely critical), it is about as straight as you can imagine…and you know black cars show everything! Scroll down and look at the additional 200+ photos. The body is extremely straight and just beautifully done.

In just the right light, you may see a light little dimple on the top of the right front fender. It is barely noticeable and could possibly be worked out from the under side. The door, deck lid, and other fits seem accurate; and the owner commented on how hard they worked to make sure all of the gaps lined up well. A lot of time and effort went into making the car as original as possible, including putting new pins in the doors.

In going over the body with a magnet, we did not detect any areas that were not steel. Because of the paint depth, we were not able to get exact readings, but it seems fairly uniform all the way around. We detected metal in all of the random areas we checked, with approximately the same amount of paint on top.

[ Chrome/Bright Work ] – The chrome on the front and rear (bumpers, grill, etc) is in extremely nice condition. It looks like that of a couple year old car. Under close inspection, from maybe 2-3 feet away, you can see a little light wear here and there. It is not brand new, but it is not thin, nor has it lost any shine. The owner does not know how old the chrome is or when it was redone.

The bright work around the front, rear, and side windows is intact and fastened well to the car. There are a few little dimples at the top of the right rear window (scroll down and click to see additional pics). All in all, the chrome looks good and shiny, and again, like a 2-3 year old car.

[ Glass ] – The current owner replaced the windshield and all of the side glass about 3-4 years ago. It is in excellent condition without any apparent discoloration, delamination, bulls-eyes, cracks, or wiper wear. The rear window is curved glass, that is not readily available to replace. Under bright light, you can see maybe a dozen fine scratches here and there, but it is still in good condition. The owner believes this might be the original rear glass for the car.

[ Interior ] – The leather on the top surface of the seats looks older, but it still has fairly good color. It is blended into a knit cloth whipcord (per the owner) interior. The driver’s seat back was reupholstered with new leather; the passenger seat was left as is. The design, stitching, door panels, side panels, etc. were all designed to look as close as possible to original.

The headliner was already in the Lincoln when the owner purchased it. It is in good condition, adheres well to the ceiling, and appears intact, with no apparent seam splitting. The carpet was installed in 2006-07 and has had mats on top of it ever since. It has good, rich color and does not show any wear. The dash jumps right out at you – it is quite striking, and just impeccable. The owner rechromed the bezels around the gauges, the horn button, and the radio chrome, which really make it look sharp.

The owner told us that when he received the car, it already had insulation in the headliner. He lined the doors and floors with ¼” foil type insulation to further quiet the car from road noise.

[ Trunk ] – When the owner performed the restorations in 2006-07, he had the trunk completely relined with all fastened-in carpet. Before he installed the carpet, he attests that there was not any rust perforation in the trunk.

The spare tire is on the outside of the car, between the trunk and bumpers. It is in good condition – the owner tells us it has never been used. The label is even still on the tire. It is an All State tire, size 8.00 – 15, which is slightly larger than the tires on the car. In the additional photos, you can see a picture of the jack that goes with the car. The new owner will probably want to put a 4-way or socket wrench with it in the trunk, as a precaution.

[ Tires and Wheels ] – According to a Lincoln authenticity guide, these 7.00 – 15R tires are the correct size for the car. All 4 are Yokohama TL Radial 215s (made by the Diamond Back people, according to owner). They have about 12/32 tread, and the seller estimates he has only put about 2,000 miles on them.

Prior to the new tire installation, the rims were sandblasted down to bare metal, then primed and painted red on the outside, black on the inside. After that, the tires were mounted and computer balanced. Magnetic weights were placed inside so you could not see them and not mark up the rim. We did not see any type of curb damage to the rims or tires.

Note: According to the owner, the Lincoln Continental emblems are only supposed to be on the front tires because they are the ones you can fully see.

[ Chassis ] – The owner explained that when these cars were built, a Zephyr chassis was beefed up with additional metal (particularly on the bottom side of the frame). They extended the car approximately another 7”. To the best of the owner’s knowledge (and per our inspection), there does not seem to be any rust perforation.

The floor pan area looks solid, without any noticed rust perforation. We did see a little repair spot above the exhaust in the rear. The owner tells us there was some reconstruction done in front of the rear wheels, in the rocker and quarter panel area. We tested the bottom of the rear quarters with a magnet and they appear to be steel. Scroll down and click through our chassis pics for more details.

We did not notice any seepage around the pan on the engine, or on the engine itself. The owner went through a lot to insure integrity of the drive train from front to back. He said you may get a drip here and there from the transmission and over drive, but it is very minimal (no puddling of any type). We thought it looked dry compared to most transmission and overdrive units. The rear end is sealed with the shaft all the way up to the transmission and it also looks really dry.

The radiator shield is an all steel design. Most of the bottom side was duplicated to look like the original rust proofing. It was been freshened up from time to time to keep its dark black color.

The owner had loosened all 4 shocks and checked them for dampening. Many of the links have been replaced so it is all good and fresh. He drained and replaced the fluid in the rear and, when he first got the car. It was always operating fine so he saw no reason to go further.

In the same time period, he took the tank down and had it sent out to be checked, cleaned, and coated to ensure its integrity. He went through the gas gauge unit to verify proper operation and it seemed just fine. The radiator was removed, flushed, checked for integrity, cleaned well, and reinstalled. The top main hoses, radiator, and heater hoses were replaced. In fact, the owner says as far as he knows, there has not been any section of hose in the cooling system that has not been replaced. All 3heater cores were removed and inspected. 2 were in good shape – 1 was replaced – then all were reinstalled in the car.

[ Engine area ] – Looking at the engine area, you can see the incredible attention to detail. Imagine the time it took to get the correct hoses, stickers, and everything as original as possible. Although the engine has been restored, painted and polished, we do not see anything that was significantly altered from what the original car was like. The owner said it was designed to be as original as possible, without any major alterations. He installed a new, manufactured, original-style wiring harness, and changed every single wire on the car. He also installed new front and rear motor mounts.

In 2009, the owner had a compression test performed on the engine - just as a precaution, for normal maintenance. All 12 cylinders read 100 pounds + or – 5, which is certainly within tolerance. He switched to Valvoline VR1 racing oil, in case the other oil was not compatible with older engines. He is running straight 30 weight in it. It has more addictives required for older automobiles. The owner did a tremendous amount of research to determine what would be the proper oil for the car, and found this one exceeds the requirements for this engine.

[ Mechanical ] – In 2006 – 2007, the owner completely went through the car and did a lot of refurbishing…not because anything was faulty, but just as a precaution. He paid a tremendous amount of attention to the car to make sure it was free as possible of mechanical problems. Obviously, this makes this Lincoln much more reliable and carefree to drive than most older cars.

The carburetor was gone through and professionally rebuilt. He also went over the generator, starter, hydraulic pump, and regulator; and then installed, all new wiring and a new battery. You can’t tell from looking at the car, but the owner internally modified the air intake, and did away with the oil bath. He also installed a modern performance air cleaner for better breathing and filtration than old units. The oil pump was replaced with a high volume oil pump.

Underneath, the engine pan was removed, and new bearings were installed. The owner took that opportunity to remove, clean, flush, and replace the freeze plugs while the pan was off.

The owner said he removed the pan and inspected the engine because he was concerned about the erratic oil pressure gauge. As it turns out, there was a wire problem that needed to be corrected on the gauge. The engine did not have an oil pressure problem (but an 80 pound pressure high volume new oil pump), but it was good preventative maintenance.

The owner also worked on the transmission while they were working on the engine. It was removed and checked for wear. He replaced a couple of bearings, resealed the transmission, added new fluid, and reinstalled. At the same time, he inspected the overdrive unit for wear items. He installed new bearings and a new main shaft.

A couple of years ago, the owner pulled out the steering box for an inspection because it seemed to steer too hard. He rebuilt it with all new gears and bearings, with seals as needed. At the same time, he replaced the tie rod that runs from this gear box (pitman arm). He verified the rest of the front end suspension components were good and tight. When the owner worked on the steering gear, he also added new tires and performed a full alignment.

When the owner pulled the wheels and tires, he saw that the shoes did not show any wear at the time. Since then, he has put maybe a couple thousand miles on them. The components inside still had paint on them, and still look fresh. The owner was not concerned about the fluid, as it still had silicone fluid in it when he checked.

The owner tells us the exhaust is set up the way it was designed to be when it was built. The only addition is a second muffler, as he believed the car should be a little quieter. He also thought the car seemed a little low in the front, so he added another front spring (3rd up from the bottom) which brought it up to what he felt was the proper height and look.

When these cars were built, it was common for them to have vapor lock problems when you restarted them hot. Most people installed a high quality, inline electric fuel pump, just as this Lincoln has. It has a separate switch on the dash which helps quicken the start if you run it (the car will start without it). This is a common improvement made to accommodate the new fuels today. It is also helpful if you have vapor lock.

Chad took the car for a short test drive and the Lincoln seemed to run well. It accelerated quickly, and shifted easily from one gear to the next. The clutch felt smooth, and the brakes stopped nice and straight without any noticeable pulling or pulsating.

Chad tested the following items on the car, and they were all working at the time of the listing:
• Turn signals (front and rear)
• Parking lights (front and rear)
• Brake light
• Headlights (high and low beams)
• Front fog lights
• Both spotlights
• Dash lights
• AM radio has worked in the past – but was tested inside a building, so we could not tell
• All 4 gauges
• Power windows
• Interior and exterior door locks
• Vents on front doors
• Car is equipped with a master cut off switch for battery (under clock in glove box)

• Clock looks beautiful, but does not work
